Examples of Titanium Flanges in the Energy and Environmental Protection Fields

The application examples of titanium flanges in the energy and environmental protection fields are diverse and abundant, showcasing their unique advantages and broad application prospects.

Energy Field:

Nickel-Metal Hydride Batteries: Titanium, due to its excellent reversible hydrogen absorption and desorption properties at high temperatures, serves as a good raw material for hydrogen storage alloys. Therefore, it is used as the negative electrode active material in nickel-metal hydride batteries.

Geothermal Energy Development: Geothermal fluids contain substances that cause significant corrosion to metals, making titanium the ideal material. Using titanium for condensers, turbines, pumps, fittings, and pipelines not only improves heat extraction efficiency but also extends the lifespan of geothermal wells.

Thermal and Nuclear Power Generation Facilities: In these facilities, condensers and heat exchangers made from titanium have a service life of up to 40 years – four times that of aluminum brass tubes and ten times that of copper-nickel alloy tubes. Although the initial investment for titanium is relatively high, the operational maintenance costs and total cost are significantly reduced. Titanium is already widely used in coastal, riverside power plants, and nuclear power units.

Onshore and Offshore Oil and Gas Drilling: Valves, nozzles, pipelines, and downhole pipes used in drilling require titanium materials. Taking downhole pipes as an example, when encountering sour gas (containing hydrogen sulfide), other metal pipes are prone to embrittlement, so titanium must be used. Titanium can resist corrosion from brine in the well and seawater at temperatures up to 300°C, making it an ideal material for drill pipes and offshore drilling equipment.

Environmental Protection Field:

Titanium flanges, due to their excellent corrosion resistance, light weight, high strength, and good temperature adaptability, are also widely used in the environmental protection field. Specifically, they are extensively applied in industries such as petroleum, chemical industry, power generation, metallurgy, chemical fibers, food, pharmaceuticals, chlor-alkali, vacuum salt production, fine chemicals, bioengineering, seawater desalination, and marine engineering. In these fields, titanium flanges effectively connect and seal various equipment and pipelines, ensuring system stability and long service life.
